In loving memory of Koko
Be aware of who
you overlook when looking for a new pet.
I was a file
clerk at the local shelter in '86. I wasn't looking for a new pet, but
every day I would walk through the kennel and look at all of the animals; just
because. That's what you do when you love animals. There she was, a shy little
brown dog that everyone passed right by, in a kennel at the back of a row.
No one noticed her because she made no attempt at getting anyone's attention.
Her info said she
was a stray. No one wanted her, for whatever reason, and her time was running
out. I checked on her every day to see if her owners came to claim her yet, but
no one ever showed up. I watched as the clock ticked and knew when she would be
euthanized. I couldn't let it happen to her, there was something about her that
I fell in love with.
Koko was a great
dog. She was friendly with everyone, although she did chase cats and hated
UPS delivery trucks. We didn't know anything about dog training at the time, so
it took awhile, but we finally got her to leave the cats alone and to
ignore the trucks. The coolest thing about Koko was that she taught herself how
to heel off-leash and I could take her for walks anywhere.
Koko went a lot
of places with us, but her favorite place was backpacking the Greenwater Trails.
She always knew where we were going as soon as the backpacks came out of the
garage and she knew the trails like the back of her paw. Having some kind of
herding dog in her, she would run up and down the trail,
making sure all of us were accounted for and in line. At the campsite, she
would sit under her favorite tree all weekend and bark at the squirrels.
We had Koko for
about 15 years, longer than any other animal we have ever owned to date. She
will always be missed.
